CASE STUDY // Pen Hadow

In 2003, Pen Hadow was preparing to reach the North Pole, solo and unsupported. We worked together in the build up, as we had done in previous expeditions, to establish mental techniques and routines to ensure both his survival in such an unforgiving climate and the achievement of his long held dream. It took Pen 64 days and 475 miles to reach the North Geographic Pole solo and without resupply from the Canadian coast - a feat which has never been repeated.

After his success, Hadow wrote a book about his North Pole expedition, Solo. In this book he explains more about our work. "Months before I set out, I'd begun working with a sport psychologist, Juliette Lloyd, and she'd helped me to establish a few useful mental techniques and routines. The key thing was not to set myself cast iron daily targets that invariably would sometimes be missed. I needed to keep the bigger picture in mind, but also to be opportunistic when the chance presented itself". (Pen Hadow, Solo.  2004).
